Out & About

Monsignor Kevin Sullivan, Executive Director of Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of New York, Sister Christine Hennessy of Catholic Charities Community Services and Empire City Casino at Yonkers Raceway's President Timothy J. Rooney at Empire City Casino's 2011 Toy and Coat Drive (Sean Hamrock)

Happy New Year to everyone! I'm sure we are all looking forward to a much better one to come.

The Irish Examiner newspaper will be celebrating its sixth year in print, would you believe it, and we are going from strength to strength let me tell you.

I would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone who has supported us down through the years and in the world today, as we are going through this weak economy,  thanks again.

I hope you all made your New Year promises on what you plan for the up coming months; let's see how long that will last.

The Emerald Isle Immigration Center needs your help as they do great work here in New York serving the community. I just got a heart warming letter from Siobhan Dennehy who is the Executive Director about a lady called Eileen who is 88 years old and has nobody here in New York and comes from Connemara in Ireland who can do with our help.

So if you can make a donation to the Emerald Isle in 2012 to help their work with Irish people like Eileen and many seniors like her it would be very gratefully appreciated and also you'd receive a full tax deduction.

For more information on the services, programs and their offices go to the website at www.eiic.org where you can also make an online donation and enroll for the newsletter.

Please mail all donations to: EIIC, 59-26 Woodside Avenue 2nd Floor, Woodside, NY 11377, Attn: Eoin Delap, Development Coordinator and it can be anything as it all helps.

Another great man is Tim Rooney the owner of Yonkers Raceway in Yonkers, who gave away over 600 coats and toys for their  Fourth Annual Toy and Coat Drive which was a huge success!

Empire City Casino at Yonkers Raceway features 5,300 slot machines, video roulette, baccarat and electronic craps tables, dining in Nonno's Trattoria, trackside in the Empire Terrace Restaurant which overlooks the track for live harness racing, as well as an International Food Court.

The multi-faceted Good Time Room is available for parties and special events for up to 500 guests.

Empire City Casino at Yonkers Raceway is located at 810 Yonkers Avenue (at Central Avenue) in Yonkers, New York, Westchester County,    (I-87 to Exit 2).

Empire City Casino is open seven days a week from 10am to 2am, Sunday through Wednesday, and until 4am Thursday through Saturday.

For more information call (914) 968-4200 or visit www.empirecitycasino.com

We here at The Irish Examiner newspaper would like to thank you whole heartily for all that you have done and also to tell you that you  were a great past Grand Marshal of the New York Saint Patrick's Day Parade.

I got a note from Kathleen Reilly-McCrink that  she has a Grand Opening Party, January 19th and 20th, for the new upstairs bar and restaurant  at the Coliseum (312 West 58th Street; (212) 877-3523). All are invited so keep it quiet!

I'm sorry I missed the Minister of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht Jimmy Deenihan TD who was in New York with a visiting delegation of Irish performing artists and companies and who visited the Residence of the Consul General of Ireland Mr. Noel Kilkenny on Sunday.

Great work has again been done by Culture Ireland and the Chief Executive of Culture Ireland Mr. Eugene Downes.

I heard that it was a great reception and that Jeff Cleary was down from Albany who is also on the board of The Irish American Heritage Museum in Albany that will be having its official opening next week.

Guess what, I have been invited and, of course I am going; I won't miss it for the World... ah it's great to be back.

See you all next week...
