Fred Astaire's Daughter To Sell Irish Home

"We were urban and highly unqualified for a bucolic lifestyle but over time, through the typical kind assistance and teaching of the Irish, we learned."

The daughter of movie legend Fred Astaire is putting the home she shares in west Cork with her husband up for sale. Clonlea Cottage, on three and a half acres of land, at Castlepoint near Schull has an asking price of €525,000.

Ava Astaire McKenzie and her husband Richard McKenzie raised their two children, Kevin and Tyler, in Cork after moving from California in 1975.

On the myhome.ie property website, Richard McKenzie writes glowingly about their life here.

"Ava maintains that we were led here and I'm inclined to agree," he writes, "True, we were searching for a more realistic lifestyle than Beverly Hills; a place to bring up the kids where such things as the right address and car and restaurant were not all-important.

"We thought that might be London, never dreaming we would find ourselves on the Irish seacoast in a 200-year-old farmhouse situated five miles from the nearest village and a healthy walk to the nearest neighbors.

"We were urban and highly unqualified for a bucolic lifestyle but over time, through the typical kind assistance and teaching of the Irish, we learned."

He describes the home as their "Nivarna for nearly four decades", and says he will miss it.

The couple is moving to Palm Springs, Florida.
