Out & About

Jimmy Smallhorne brings his talents to Punch/Wined Up on August 13th
I know you are all going to miss us next week as we are taking a week's vacation. Stop crying, we will be back on the 17th bigger and better I promise.
This paper is catching on fire, let me tell you, and by that I mean our sales are going threw the roof and its all thanks to you our readers.
If you want a bang for your buck this is definitely the paper to advertise in and, most of all, to keep the Irish tradition going as we are leaders in all walks of life and no one can deny it! Now, how about that huh?
I was in Rockville Center on Thursday night for the Continental Youth Championships' parade.
This event blew my mind with all the kids and families that came from Ireland, Canada, England and all around the USA to participate in the games at Eisenhower Field on last Thursday, Friday, Saturday with the finale on Sunday.
I could see the excitement on all the kids faces and they all seemed happy just to be there.
I have to hand it to the committee for putting this event together as it had to be a lot of hard work and, to all the volunteers with the job well done, you should all be very proud of what you have done on Long Island and in Nassau County.
The revenue it brought in with hotel rooms full to capacity and bars and restaurants rocking was a boost for everyone. Again, congratulations!
The whole project started from the office of the former Nassau County Chief Executive Tom Suozzi with great help from Dermot Kelly, Marty Glennon, Tom Dwyer, Mike Kelly, Sean Crowley, Dan Deegan, Francis Ryan and Dave Mejias who all went to Ireland and visited Croke Park in Dublin to encourage this event to come to Nassau County. Well done lads you brought great joy to Long Island. Let's hope it all happens again!
After the CYC Parade we all got to meet for some drinks and dinner at George Martins in Rockville Center and were joined by the man himself: John Dunleavy, the Chairman of The New York Saint Patrick's Day Parade Committee, together with Timmy Myles, A.O.H Division 14 President and a few more.
What a get together it was, it went really well. Oh, I nearly forgot, Deirdre O'Hea from the Cork Association joined us... yes you're right she was the only woman there and got lots of attention I might tell you...
I was there again on Saturday and let me tell you it was a roaring success and again what a professional job everyone did, especially Larry McCarthy the President of the New York GAA.
He drove me around in a golf cart to review all the games and who did I get to meet? Only the President of the GAA in Ireland Christy Cooney and his wife Ann and we had a good chat I might tell you.
Again the weather played a great part and the crowds came out in their thousands and Christy Cooney had a good smile on his face when he got the result of the Kerry game and, I am sure he had another when he got the result from Sunday's game that Cork won...
Now down to very serious business: Please come along to Father Brian Jordan's Birthday Party on Thursday August 5th.
This event will be held on the upper level of Mustang Harry's (352 7th Avenue between 29th and 30th Streets, near Madison Square Garden; 212-268-8930) from 5:30pm to 8:30pm.
There are two Topics up for discussion: The location of the Cross at Ground Zero and ideas for the 10th Anniversary of 9/11.
There'll be a free buffet and a discount cash bar. A donation of $500 per table or $50 per person is suggested. Checks can be made payable to Father Brian Jordan. He can be reached on (646) 473-0413 or by mail to Father Brian Jordan, Holy Name Church, 207 W. 96th St., New York, NY 10025,
Now where on earth would you get a bargain like that making a donation and food and drinks as well?
Happy Birthday Father Jordan from all of us here at The Irish Examiner newspaper. Save some cake for me as I will be in Ireland around the 5th for a few days.
Talking about Ireland the Cork Association have a big banquet in the Rochestown Park Hotel in Cork and I have been told that it is sold out.
Now I wonder why? Maybe because the President Mary Power and Mae O'Driscoll made a great push along with Deirdre O'Hea and Mary Waters. Good on you girls... great work!
Going through life with a name like Smallhorne, a sense of humor becomes a saving grace. Jimmy Smallhorne was acclaimed for his stage portrayal of Bobby Sands among many roles, founded an award winning theater company with the late great Chris O'Neill, won the cinematography prize at Sundance with his first feature film 2by4 and has several upcoming film projects in the pipeline.
But on Friday, August 13th, Jimmy will be back in front of a live audience for the first time in over a decade with his new show, Jimmy Smallhorne's Resurrection.
A two-hour epic featuring Jimmy's unique comedy and some outstanding musical guests, the shows are being staged in a new exciting venue at Punch/Wined Up (913 Broadway between 20th and 21st Streets), an upscale yet casual wine bar that features a 3,000 bottle - one hundred foot wine wall along with our chef's signature pastas, pizzas, cheeses and charcuterie platters.
The hosts Matt and Patty McDonagh along with their partners Colm McGuckian and Tom Cames are very excited to have Jimmy perform on their new stage and reservations (which are strongly recommended) can be made by calling (212) 673-9333 from 10am to 10pm.
The show is playing on Friday August 13th at 8pm and 11pm, so try and check it out.
We'll see you all again in two weeks.
