Uruguayan Boost For Bombardier

The Minister said: "This multi-million pound contract for Bombardier is a welcome boost for their workforce here in Belfast. It reflects a confidence in the company and in its staff in Northern Ireland.

"On a recent visit to the Belfast plant, it was encouraging to see that apprentices in Bombardier are receiving valuable work experience on top of their qualifications. Apprentices play a vital role in ensuring that we have a better skilled workforce in Northern Ireland which, in turn, leads to a more robust economy. This is essential in ensuring that we make the most of the economic recovery when it comes and this new contract will be an exciting and valuable experience for all involved."

Parts for three new Bombardier CRJ900 NextGen regional planes have been ordered by Uruguay's flag-carrying airline Pluna Lineas Aereas Uruguayas SA. The total order is worth around $120 million (£78 million). Bombardier Belfast designs and manufactures fuselage, engine covers and wing components for the CRJ900. Pluna may order another six aircraft.
