Dempsey Commends Drivers For Record Achievement
"Road deaths are not only tragic, they are avoidable. The 40 families who lost loved ones on Irish roads since the start of this year, know the heart ache that road accidents bring."
The Irish Department of Transport confirmed last week that the number of deaths (11) on Irish roads for the month of March 2010 has fallen to its lowest number since records began more than 40 years ago. The number of tragic deaths to date for 2010 is 40, which is down 17 on the 2009 figure.
Announcing the record low, Dempsey said: "Road deaths are not only tragic, they are avoidable. The 40 families who lost loved ones on Irish roads since the start of this year, know the heart ache that road accidents bring.
"Many more people have also sustained very serious, life-altering injuries as a result of road accidents since the start of the year.
"As we approach a very busy Easter weekend, many people will be taking to the roads. I am urging everyone, irrespective of whether or not you are travelling long or short distances, to please take care.
"If you are travelling long distances, remember to take short breaks. People who continue to drive while fighting sleep may fall asleep at the wheel and never wake up. This is horrific for the grieving families left behind. One life lost, is one too many.
The Minister continued: "I want to thank the Road Safety Authority and An Garda Síochána in driving the road safety message home.
"Road users must continue to step up to the challenge and improve their driving behaviour. This will mean safer roads, more people spared with fewer tragic deaths and serious accidents on our roads."
