Ronnie McGinn's Poetry Page

If you have a poem you'd like to see published in The Irish Examiner then send it to:

The Poetry Corner
The Irish Examiner USA
1040 Jackson Avenue, Third Floor

or, preferably, you can email it direct to
ronniemcginn@eircom.net.

If possible keep your poem to 20 lines. You may choose any subject you like, in any form you like as long as it's original. We look forward to hearing from you.

Two weeks ago we had a poem anbout a washing machine from Ann Leo O'Connor of the Bishopstown Writers Group in Cork.

This week we have a poem about a clothes line from Clare Murphy of the Douglas Writers Group.

Admittedly I have an affinity towards lyrical poetry and Clare Murphy certainly does not disappoint, she captures the scene beautifully, a familiar everyday event that we never seem to notice is brought to life in full colour and class action, in the inner sanctums of our minds. Thank you Clare!

The Clothes Line

The clothes on the line are having such fun,
Blowing hither and thither as if on the run.
The wind that fills sails on boats on the brine
Can puff up the laundry into shapes of all kinds.

Trousers and sweaters, towels and bed sheets
Love windy weather as they dance to the beat
On a tightrope straight line or a rotary trapeze,
Like acrobats flying through the air with great ease.

They flutter and flap and shudder and shake,
Clothes pegs for harness to keep them all safe.
They skip and they dance and move in and out,
They toss and they tumble and flounce all about.

When the clothes come to life they're such fun to watch
As if they were playing a game of 'catch'.
So whether it blows from the east or the west
From the north or the south, fresh air is best.
