If you have a poem you'd like to see published in The Irish Examiner then send it to:

The Poetry Corner

or, preferably, you can email it direct to

If possible keep your poem to 20 lines. You may choose any subject you like, in any form you like as long as it's original. We look forward to hearing from you.

Someone, but I'm not sure who, once said to me that he considered poetry to be a passionate art form.

Certainly it has provided us with an outlet for exploring our innermost thoughts and emotions. Regardless of the style or subject chosen, we are able to express our intimate feelings using this ancient tradition.

Poetry can be therapeutic, allowing us to work through issues in our lives to find solutions, clarity, comfort, and peace of mind.

It is by virtue of this versatility that the art form of poetry has remained strong century after century.

Our poem this week from Niall Markey, of Maspeth, New York beautifully illustrates the point.

Solace

Solace is the word
Solace is the way...

Feelings succumb to numbness
As elbows hold steadfast
Upon the gaping grains of old oak
These flamed and furrowed faces
Speak silently of loss and displacement

As a lost soul seeks subtle grace,
Somewhere within the rustic gleam
And the Smokey taste
Of the poet's wine
Measured are the heartfelt tears
That guise as waves crashing
Upon the coastal rocks of an elixir sea

With the backward tilt of a head
Elusive goodness perilously
Pours poverty into a soul

Solace is the word
Solace is the way...
