If possible keep your poem to 20 lines. You may choose any subject you like, in any form you like as long as it's original. We look forward to hearing from you.

Some time ago Padraig de Brun sent us a poem called 'The Cruise' which made us think about our approach towards God. His poem this week can slip through the strings of one's heart and touch that humanity we sometimes try to hide.

Born in Listowel, Co. Kerry, Padraig made New York his home in 1962. He played music with several NY bands for a while. He loves good poetry, and well written songs and stories. Padraig is a member of the Irish American Society, Mineola NY, The Kerrymens P & B Association NY, the Cill Cais Players - an Irish Theatre group ( putting on 2 plays in NY at the moment). He's married with 2 children, 2 grand-children and as he likes to add, "has a few silver hairs".

The Great Grand Son

We were sitting on the curb stone,
T'was only him and me -
And he, he was only 5 years old,
And I on 63.
"Can we unbury Great Gran Ma?"
Was the question that he asked. -
As he flicked the pebbles on her grave,
"Stop" I said, "she -won't - like - that."!

My heart grew heavy in my breast,
A tear began to show.
Remembering him upon her knee -
A short 3 years ago.
"I miss Great Gran Ma," says he -
And he began to cry,
I put my arm around him and
Gently whispered, "So do I "

I had told him she was buried here -
Beside his Great Gran Dad.
"Can we unbury Great Gran Pa too" -
Said the Innocent little Lad.
"Ah, No, Sure they're in heaven now
But I bet they're glad you're here -
Great Gran Ma loved you very much, she told me so," -
I lost another tear.

As I scooped him in my arms to go -
Pretending rain was in my eye
He said, "Grandpa, Can we unbury Great Grand Ma,
I want to say goodbye."
