Out & About

We should definitely forget about politics and support our own when one of ours is down as that is what we are all about: helping each other.

It was a bad week for the Democrats in New York and New Jersey; you see, just because you have the majority in the Government does not give you the comfort of sitting back.

The reason I brought this up is a great friend of this paper might be out of work and that is Dermot Kelly, Director of Real Estate for Nassau County in New York who was educated at Iona College in business.

We should definitely forget about politics and support our own when one of ours is down as that is what we are all about: helping each other.

Now for all the latest gossip... I have been to O'Casey's Bar and Restaurant (on 41st Street between Madison and Fifth Avenue) that has a new proprietor named Paul Hurley who is well known around the city as he has three  other establishments and is also the President of the United Restaurant and Tavern Owners Association right here in New York. How does he do it? Well you're asking me? It's hard to keep up with him. I wonder does his wife ever see him? Just kidding.

Paul is what we call a workhorse and I do mean that with a lot of affection for he has been a great supporter of The Irish Examiner newspaper from day one.

His new restaurant is a very cosy place to meet your friends.  It has got three floors which can handle from 50 to 200 patrons for meetings or for social gatherings.

It's walking distance to Grand Central Station and handy for if you're out shopping in Times Square, Fifth Avenue and the Theatre district is just a stone throw away.

I went out for a pint to the Pig'N'Whistle on 47th         Street for what I thought was a quite pint; well I was wrong as the place was packed.

Pat Burke was as always a very welcoming host and who might I bump into? Only the one and only Dermot Kelly, a little more upbeat now, along with Tony Cullinane - a well known bar owner here in New York - and, of course, we had a pint or two and were joined by some visitors from upstate New York.

Now where in the world except New York would you get to meet friends all over place when you're out and about... I love this city.

St Andrew's (140 West 46th Street) is owned by Martin Whelan and has a great prix-fixe Dinner Menu for just $29.95. That's great value as it is just off Time Square.

It also has live Celtic music every Saturday night from 9pm to 1am. For reservations call (212) 840-8413.

Two doors away you have O'Brien's Irish Pub which is a very well-known establishment for its food and  has two floors, onw featuring The Sin Bin - home of the North American Munster Rugby Supporters Club. They better start winning soon...

Do not forget to go and see Finian's Rainbow at the St. James' Theatre (246 West 44th Street). For tickets call (212) 239-6200.

The Ancient Order of Hibernians' New York State Board Freedom For All Ireland Committee are holding a benefit social in support of the AOH Christmas Appeal on Thursday December 3 in O'Rielly's Pub (31st Street and Broadway). The event starts at 6.30pm and features entertainment by Tom Casey.

The annual AOH Christmas Appeal supports programs in the north of Ireland including Relatives for Justice, Bloody Sunday Families, Pat Finucane Center, Coiste, Caidre and cross community groups. Your support would be greatly appreciated.  All are welcome. ($20 suggested donation.)

For more information, contact the NYS FFAI chairman, Tim Myles at timtam614@aol.com or (516) 660-7456 or simply visit www.aoh.com

Tim Myles is everywhere you look. If he is not working on Track 16 in Penn Station, you will find him at another track, namely Tracks Raw Bar and Grill in Penn Station chatting with Michael O'Brien. I always wonder what they're talking about, huh?

The Adrian Flannelly  Show is broadcast every Saturday in the New York tri-state regional radio broadcast area from 9am until 10am on WNYE 91.5FM), and from 10am - 12 noon on WVNJ 1160AM.

All shows are live streamed and archived on their website. This man does not look a day over 40 as I met him recently and he was looking like a million. I'd like to know what's his secret.

Glucksman Ireland House is the Center for Irish Studies at New York University. Next week they'll be presenting "U.S. Spy in Ireland: The Truth behind Irish 'Neutrality' During World War II" on Thursday November 12 at 7pm.

You can e-mail them at ireland.house@nyu.edu or by phone on (212) 998-3950.

See you all next week.
