D.J. Carey Dies In New York

DJ and Hugh Carey in New York City last year

The death occurred Sunday in New York of D.J. Carey.  D.J. was a long-time  member and supporter of the Ireland-U.S. Council and many other organizations.  The cause of death was Lou Gehrig's disease (ALS).

He was educated at Cranwell Preparatory School and graduated from Fairfield University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Management.

For many years, he served as a Vice-President of Public Finance at Prudential Securities where he specialized in state and municipal financings, including housing, public power and general obligation debt markets.

In his later career he served as a management consultant on a variety of projects to industrial companies and international organizations.

He was a beloved figure in New York circles and especially in the Irish-American family. D.J. Carey was a Hibernophile without peer.  Throughout his life D.J. expended great effort to help others and his much-too-young passing robs the community of a person who loved life and the people he encountered in life.

He was a faithful supporter of the East End Hospice and was Chairman of their Gala Dinner in Quogue, New York in 2008 and was honored as the Recipient of this year's 10th Annual Dorothy P. Savage Good Samaritan Award at its Gala on June 27 last.

In the past two years, since being diagnosed with ALS, D.J. was prominent in fundraising and lobbying efforts on behalf of the ALS Association and was an honoree at its dinner in New York in 2008.

He was also a Director of The Long Island SoundKeeper Fund.

From 1979 through 1997, he was a Director of the American Ireland Fund (and its predecessor, The American-Irish Foundation).

He was a Founding Board Member of Ireland's Children.  He was also a member of the Society of the Friendly Sons of Saint Patrick in the City of New York.

He was active in numerous statewide and national campaign and political committees for various gubernatorial, municipal, congressional and senatorial races over the past twenty-five years.

He had also served as Vice President and Secretary of the Parish Council of the Church of St. John the Evangelist in New York.
