Junior Ministers Discuss Community Tensions In Coleraine

Minister Kelly described the discussion as open and frank. He said: "Tackling sectarianism remains a key priority for the Executive and we are convinced that a multi-agency approach is crucial to the success of community cohesion in Coleraine.

"With additional support from OFMDFM, Coleraine Council has been able to organise a number of projects over the summer months to promote dialogue and engagement at a leadership level as well as a programme of diversionary activities for young people.

"There is a lot of work and relationship building to be done but we are determined to make a difference and we are in it for the long haul."

Junior Minister Newton: "[The] meeting was about hearing at first hand what has been happening on the ground and what support we can provide to tackle sectarianism and promote good community relations.

"At the meeting we considered a longer-term strategy to address the causes of tensions in the area and ways of supporting the council, police and statutory agencies during the coming months to encourage discussion among key groups.

"Work is also being planned to challenge beliefs, prejudices, stereotyping and sectarianism among young people as well as building confidence and trust."
