McGuinness Visits Rathlin And Corrymeela Communities

"The work being undertaken in Corrymeela mirrors much of what we as an Executive strive to achieve in terms of building a shared society defined by tolerance and respect for diversity."

Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness has visited Rathlin Island on board the new catamaran, 'Rathlin Express', which came into service between Ballycastle and the island earlier in the summer.

The Minister's visit comes at the midpoint of a consultation process on a draft government policy designed to address challenges experienced by island life.

He joined passengers on the 20 minute trip to the island saying he hoped his visit would underline the Executive's continued commitment to developing improved infrastructure and public services for the North's only inhabited off shore island.

The Minister said: "Our islands hold a special and unique place in our society and culture. I am delighted to be here today onboard the Rathlin Express which will undoubtedly play a significant part in improving the lives of local people as well as enhancing the undoubted tourist potential that this beautiful island holds for visitors.

"The draft policy launched by my ministerial colleague Conor Murphy in June, is designed to address the special challenges faced by island communities, be that in terms of infrastructure, health and educational provision and economic development."

During his visit Mr McGuinness met with members of the island community to hear at first hand their experiences and encourage their participation in the consultation process.

Following his visit to Rathlin, the deputy First Minister also paid a visit to the Corrymeela Community in Ballycastle where he met with groups who are participating in residential programmes there.

"The work being undertaken in Corrymeela mirrors much of what we as an Executive strive to achieve in terms of building a shared society defined by tolerance and respect for diversity," Mr McGuinness said.

"The people who visit this centre are reflective of all aspects of our society and in many ways the reconciliatory work undertaken here, through dialogue and sharing of experiences, provides a template for us all as we move forward," he added.
