John Kieran Henry originally from Co. Louth, now living in Connecticut and formerly wrote the Connecticut News Column in the Irish Echo.

John sent us some wonderful poems and it was very difficult to single one out.

There is something in "Mothers Loving Eyes" that reaches out to everyone, and to all ages, whether they are at home or abroad.

Welcome to the World

'Twas a cold day in October
When I left Erin's Isle
The mist was on the water
And a tear drop in my eyes
As the tender left Cobh in Cork
For the liner in the bay
I looked back at the pier
Saw my mother's loving eyes.

The liner sailed away from Cobh
Onto the briny ocean
I looked back to the shore
As Ireland stayed behind
The harbor disappeared
As did the Kerry coast
But in my mind, all I could see
Were my mother's loving eyes.

Years have passed since that day
And I became a man
I raised a family of my own
Two daughters of great beauty
Life has been good, I will admit
I've seen my life fulfilled
But nothing ever can replace
My mother's loving eyes

You cannot know the feeling
Of the hurt of leaving home
Unless you travel on that path
An emigrant from home
I have walked that lonely walk
From Cobh of Cork to here
But through it all, I still recall
My mother's loving eyes.
