Out & About

Tommy Smyth the legendary ESPN sportscaster was the Master of Ceremonies for the night introducing all the contestants in his truely splendid way and doing a great job as always.

I was up to my ankles in mud last Friday as I was at the US Golf Open to cheer on Padraig Harrington but he failed miserably to make the cut with two rounds of 76.

I really think the weather played a big part in the way he played and, after the start he got on Thursday, I knew it would be hard for him to make a comeback.

I headed to Bethpage with none other than Pat Burke and Dermot Kelly at nine in the morning and, lucky for me, they advised me to put on an old pair of shoes. Of course, they had all the right gear on for the golf course: boots and shorts, well what can I say?

If anybody out there finds a mobile phone either in Bethpage or Farmingdale, Long Island it might be Pat Burke's as he left it in one of these towns after the golf.

As we are on the golf, there are two very big golf outings happening in the next couple of weeks.

First you have the Emerald Guild Society's (the Irish Building Managers of New York City) 10th Annual Timothy J. O'Connor Memorial Golf Outing which is being held on Tuesday July 7 at the Links at Unionvale (188 S. Parliman Road, La Grangeville, New York, (845) 223-1002).

This organization is one of the most professional groups and they give a lot to charity and this year they will be donating a portion of the golf outing proceeds and 100% of website advertisements to a number of charities.

To advertise your company name, phone number and website or logo go to www.emeraldguild.org.

If you would like to attend this event or simply make a donation, please call Michael O'Reilly, their Chairman at (212) 945-4346, (or moreillym@yahoo.com) or Garrett Doyle, their President at (212) 751-3667 (or gdoyle5@nyc.rr.com).

The donations will be contributed to Louise Daggett Fund, Aisling Center, the GAA Minor Board, the NY Irish Center, LIC, Emerald Isle Immigration Center, Project Irish Children, HOPe, Ecuador Quilt, the Ladies Gaelic Football, The American Irish Historical Society and the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation.

As I said these guys are the best so again please check out their website at www.emeraldguild.org or call them (212) 980-5907.

The Tom Suozzi Nassau County Excutive 15th Annual Golf Classic and Dinner will be held on Monday, July 6; that will be happening at three golf courses: the Nassau County Golf Club, the North Shore Country Club and the Engineers Country Club.

Now, not to confuse you, I'll clarify, the Golf will be played at three different golf clubs and the cocktail reception and dinner after the golfing will be held at the Nassau County Club at 6pm.

For more information call Danielle Oglesby at (516) 393-9080 or e-mail oglesby@tomsuozzi.com.

The Rose of Tralee compettition for New York and New Jersey was held last Saturday at Legents on 33rd Street to a full house that was sponsored by Eddie Dowling and the Padded Wagon with a lot of pretty girls completing for a place in the contest.

The New York winner was Ashling Colton. Ashling was born in 1987 in Sunnyside, Queens.

Her parents, Patrick and Geraldine emigrated from Co. Tyrone in the North, which is where Ashling frequently travels to visit her large, extended family.

At a young age she moved to Massapequa Park in Long Island, where she grew up with her younger brother, Matthew.

A recent graduate of Fordham University with a Bachelors of Science in Business Administration, Ashling concentrated her degree in the marketing field and minored in communications and media.

For the past two years Ashling has served as co-host of Ceol na nGael, the music of the Irish, on 90.7fm WFUV.

Currently, while residing in Woodlawn in the Bronx, she is in the midst of the application process to return to Fordham and pursue her master's degree.

Tommy Smyth the legendary ESPN sportscaster was the Master of Ceremonies for the night introducing all the contestants in his truely splendid way and doing a great job as always.

Frank Dwyer, Legents owner and partner, was on hand to make sure everything went well on the night and it did as everyone enjoyed themselves.

Frank is also involved with Hurley's Saloon, Jack Demsey's, The Playwright Irish Pub, The Playwright Celtic Pub, The Playwright Tavern, Bourbon Street Bar and Grill and the French Quarters Guest Apartments (on West 46th Street).

We stopped at the Galway Hooker on Monday night to meet up with some Bushmills people and let tell you it was packed with a very friendly crowd.

After a few cocktails there we headed down to Foley's on 33rd Street for some dinner and no sign of Sean or his Dad... another day off huh?

That great Kerrywoman Noelle Clancy was around town over the weekend and seen at Legents for the Rose of Tralee checking to see if there were any of her friends around. Sorry we missed you; those Kerry people all stick together.

See you all next week.
