Toasting The Socialist Pirates
One of the most heartening developments on the political landscape is the growing grassroots movement known as the tea parties, a nationwide tax revolt against the spendthrift policies of the Obama regime.
The tea parties have bona fide American Revolutionary roots. Taxation prompted the historic civil disobedience when Sam Adams, Paul Revere, and their coevals in the Sons of Liberty, dressed as Native Americans and dumped chests of tea into Boston Harbor.
Today's protests range in size from 2,000 to 6,000 souls, and comprise Democrats, Republicans, conservatives, and libertarians fighting back against the socialistic smother love of the nanny state and her stimulus and entitlement claptrap.
At least 300 protests are scheduled across the country for Wednesday, April 15th, alone, some 30 in the Big Apple.
It was instructive to see the fervent wall-to-wall press coverage of the raucous G-20 leftists in London as compared to the peaceful tea parties that have been taking place quietly around the country.
The progressives, who bray about power to the people, show a studied disregard for grassroots of a different stripe.
Forget about fair and balanced coverage from the Irish and Irish-American media. There's no opposition press to speak of, and no right wing on their parrots. At most we expect them to set up straw men and mischaracterize the nature of the protests and the character of the protestors.
The usual leftist suspects are planning to launch counterprotests, engage in character assassination, act as agents provocateurs, and do their best to gum up the works.
If and when there is press coverage, the liberal backlash will attempt to portray peaceful, patriotic protestors as a lynch mob of mouth-breathing ignoramuses, nativist Neanderthal Know-Nothings, arrant racists, the lunatic fringe, and assorted fundamentalist gun nuts gussied up in tin foil hats and camo.
ACORN will infiltrate the ranks. The Daily Kos, MoveOn.org, the Huffington Post, the slavish networks, and the moribund mainstream media will do their thing. It's what they live for. It's their m.o.
Thank the Obama regime for its Department of Homeland Security's Office of Intelligence and Analysis spewing out on April 7th a shoddy and altogether atrocious piece of propaganda called "Rightwing Extremism: Current Economic and Political Climate Fueling Resurgence in Radicalization and Recruitment."
Devoid of specifics, the document warned about possible violence by white supremacists and sinister unnamed groups exercised over abortion, gun control, illegal immigration, big government, federal power, and the deterioration of America's sovereignty.
In a particularly vicious swipe, the report said that "the return of military veterans facing significant challenges reintegrating into their communities could lead to the potential emergence of terrorist groups or lone wolf extremists capable of carrying out violent attacks." So Big Brother and his eunuchs may be watching you dare to do justice to that glass of tea.
In 1996 and 2000, the strength of presidential candidate Steve Forbes rested on one fact and one alone: He may have been a single-issue campaigner but people were convinced that he'd deliver the flat tax, if he were elected.
At the time, for what it's worth, we'd have preferred a consumption or value-added tax, ending the need to work off the books, with the delightful prospect of a reduction of the Democrats' pet monster - the intrusive, all-powerful IRS - to 50 state clerks each mailing out an annual check to a clerk in Washington, D.C. No matter. The best causes may be the lost ones, but it was the right way forward.
In 2006, fed up with a torrent of GOP spending, scandals, and earmarks, 11 million fewer Republicans and Conservatives voted than in 2002.
Democrats also stayed home - 500,000 fewer voted than in 2002 - but that was enough to take Congress.
They saw their opportunity and they seized it, touting "change." It was their long-awaited Reformation, but it's turned out to be the same-old, same-old.
In 2008, some 4 million Republican and Conservative voters - disenchanted with the clueless "McDole" presidential campaign - stayed home. The result was the Manchurian Mandate. Now we are witnessing a Counterreformation and here we are: Places have been set for tea parties nationwide. Let's celebrate the birthday of Big Brother with a proper toast to his downfall.
