Despite a performance that manager Gordon Strachan described as "poor", Celtic advanced to the quarterfinals of the Homecoming Scottish Cup with a 2-1 victory over Queen's Park at Celtic Park.
Celtic started the game slowly and Queen's Park almost took the lead in the second minute when Ryan Holmes took a long-distance shot that was deflected with a great save from Artur Boruc.
Seven minutes later, Celtic had their own chance when Maloney set up a shot for Vennegoor of Hesselink, but the Dutchman's shot was block by James Brough.
The home side finally took the lead in the 19th minute after Queen's Park defender Martin Ure was booked for a foul on Aiden McGeady.
Lee Naylor took the free-kick and swung a ball in that was met by O'Dea's head, then headed into the net by Gary Caldwell.
Scott McDonald doubled the Bhoys' lead just before the half-time whistle when he struck a Vennegoor of Hesselink header into the back of the net.
Queen's Park came out after the interval with determination, but they were looking to be flagging until they narrowed the deficit in the 65th minute.
Holms' cross from the right was struck at goal by substitute Adam Coakley.
Boruc stopped the shot but the rebound came back to Coakley and he made no mistake second time around.
The goal energized the Second Division outfit, but despite great effort they were unable to get the equalizer - the chances of which were reduced when Coakley was ejected from the game for a second yellow card with eleven minutes left in the game.
Celtic boss Gordon Strachan was displeased with his team's effort, saying, "It was very poor, I didn't enjoy it all, and I didn't enjoy watching it.
"Darren O'Dea did well and Paddy showed a wee bit of promise when he came on along with Paul Hartley, who was one of my better picks.
"Artur did well too, but apart from that, we were rather poor."
