Martin Welcomes Appointment Of Senator Mitchell

"We in Ireland remember with deep gratitude Senator Mitchell's key role in our own peace process as chairman of the Good Friday Agreement negotiations."

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr Micheál Martin T.D., has warmly welcomed the appointment of Senator George Mitchell as U.S. Special Envoy to the Middle East.

The Minister said: "The appointment of Senator Mitchell is an inspired choice by President Obama and further underscores his most welcome commitment to placing the Middle East Peace Process at the top of his administration's foreign policy agenda.

"We in Ireland remember with deep gratitude Senator Mitchell's key role in our own peace process as chairman of the Good Friday Agreement negotiations.  His wisdom and determination were essential. It was striking that in accepting his new role last night he spoke of his Irish experience, stressing the need for patience and optimism.  Secretary Clinton is also deeply familiar with our peace process.  While every conflict is different, like Senator Mitchell I believe that lessons learned in one can be of value in approaching others, and the Government stands ready to offer any assistance which might be of use."
