The Minister of Education and Science, Batt O'Keeffe T.D., congratulated the four top award-winners at the 45th BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition.

Minister O'Keeffe paid tribute to the more than 3,700 students across Ireland who submitted 1,616 entries to the competition.

"Five hundred of these projects were selected to go forward and take part in the final competition at the RDS.

"I want to sincerely congratulate all the students and I commend each of them for the superb quality of their endeavours.

"For those who were chosen to have their work exhibited, today is the culmination of all their efforts which have been supported so passionately by our hard-working and dedicated teachers and by parents across the country.

"Special mention is due to the four award-winners who've shown that their work is truly remarkable and they are a credit to themselves, their families and their parents.

"This is an especially proud day for them," said Minister O'Keeffe.

He said he hoped the enthusiasm and creativity the students demonstrated at the exhibition would never be lost as they prepare to enter the world of work.

"The BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition has now become a staple part of the academic calendar for the school community.

"It's a unique celebration of science, creativity and the curiosity of our young people.

"It's remarkable that, 45 years ago, the first exhibition was held in the Mansion House in Dublin and, since then, some 750,000 people have come to observe the scientific and technological talents of our young people.

"The BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition is now one of the world's longest running science exhibitions for young students.

"I hope the enthusiasm and creativity the students demonstrated at the exhibition will never be lost as they prepare to enter the world of work."
