Longtime Sligo Gael, Larry McCarthy, Is Elected As Chairman Of The New York GAA

Larry McCarthy, PhD, the new Chairman of the New York GAA Board for 2009

Last week Larry McCarthy was elected as Chairman of the New York GAA Board for 2009.

In a close contest, McCarthy defeated incumbent John Riordan by 35 votes to 27.

A longtime member of the Sligo Football club, McCarthy is the first member of the club to be elected as County Chairman.

"While I am honored to be chosen as Chairman I realize that there is a great deal of work to be done to maintain the vibrancy of the NY GAA," he said.

"The tremendous work being done for boys and girls at underage level must be developed and followed through at the adult level.

"It is also crucial that the NY GAA continue to partner with various organizations to seek a suitable resolution to the immigration issues affecting our community," he concluded.

Larry McCarthy was born and reared in Cork City.

Currently he is an associate professor of management at the W. Paul Stillman School of Business at Seton Hall University where he teaches in the Center for Sport Management.

He has published articles in national and international sport management journals and co-authored, with Richard Irwin and Bill Sutton, the text Sport Promotion and Sales Management.

He was appointed by The Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games (ACOG) as an Olympic Envoy to the Olympic Council of Ireland for the Centennial Olympic Games.

A member of the Sligo Football Club he served as secretary of the NY Board from 2002 to 2008.
