Out & About

The Galway Association had its 127th Annual Dinner Dance last week at the Astoria Manor in Queens New York and the Guest of Honor was none other than Jimmy Glynn, the well known proprietor of the Jake's Saloons here in Manhattan.

The event was great success and was attended by Jimmy's family his wife Bernie, son Jake and his Mom Peggy Glynn plus the extended Glynn family.

A presentation was made to Jimmy by the Galway Association President Dennis Casey along with Kevin Kennedy who is a pillar of success for his photography in the Irish Community.

DJ Carey got the Jacob K. Javitts Lifetime Achievement Award at Fourteenth Annual Lou Gehrig Sports Awards Benefit at the New York Marriott Marquis Hotel in Times Square, New York.

Dennis Carey (DJ) is well known in the Irish Community for his friendship and his kindness to everybody that crosses his path and he's always ready for a good chat on any subject you bring.

DJ was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's disease only recently and is fighting it with all his heart so please keep in mind that he is one of us.

At the event was Mike Carty and his wife Caroline the owners of Rosie O'Grady's on Seventh Avenue, Doctor Paddy Boland and his wife, Sheila and Gene McCarthy, David O'Sullivan of the Ireland US Council, Buzzy O'Keeffe owner of the Water Club, River Club and the Pershing Square restaurants in New York, the Deputy Consol General Brendan O'Caollai and his wife and, from the Adrain Flannelly Irish Radio Show you had producer Aine Sheridan and writer and editor Pete Hamill

As you can see the cream of the crop came out for our DJ.

The other honored guests on the program that night were tennis legend John McEnroe who grew up in Long Island suburb of Douglaston, and since has compiled an unparalleled record of achiements-including more than 150 singles and doubles titles to date, Sandy Koufax, one of baseball's greatest pitchers with a blazing fastball who earned the National League's Most Valuable Player and the Cy Young Award and the famous Yankee slugger Chris Chambliss.

Another great pitcher of Dodgers fame who gave a special performance was the great Ralph Branca who was there with Presenter Bob Costas whose covered events from the National Football League to the Olympics  and beyond. Now I am sure you all know who he is, right?

Paid a visit to the Public House Bar and Restaurant at East 41st Street between Lexington and Third Avenue. Let me tell you, the owner Elvis is a great host and the food is superb with the prices just as good.

Another fine establishment can be found on the west side - The Parlour on West 86th Street. Always ready to greet you is the man himself, John Kelly.

The Parlour is also the home of Glasgow Celtic and shows all the games live.

We were sorry that we missed The Terry McCarthy Benefit at The Parlour though. We're am told it was a great success.

If you are in midtown call into the new Irish bar and restaurant Legends on West 33rd Street. This new bar shows all major sports events in HD with surround sound.

Congratulations to Michael Collins (assistant chief at the NYPD) who was guest of honor at the Clare Association Dinner Dance and to Mike Sheehan who's a senior correspondent at WNYW-TV/Fox 5 News.

Mike has spent the past 15 1/2 years covering crime stories on the streets of New York, and hosts the award- winning segment "New York's Most Wanted," where an unsolved crime is closely profiled and the public's help is sought.

Since Mike took over this task, a large number of the cases he has profiled have been solved thanks to tips from the public and Fox 5 viewers.

Mike was the guest of honor at the Ancient Order of Hibernians in America Annual Dinner Dance last Sunday.

Congratulations to all the honorees from all the staff at The Irish Examiner newspaper.

See you all next week.
