According to a statement issued by the Committee: "We decided to make the announcement now, due to all of the recent turmoil around the world and especially in the New York's financial sector.
"The Parade has always had a soothing and calming effect on New York, and is an event in which all New Yorker's enjoy regardless of their heritage.
"We want to assure the public, that we are moving forward with plans for the greatest Irish event in the world, regardless of what is happening around the globe.
"We have always looked to the Parade as a symbol of the resilience of the great city of New York and the selection of the Grand Marshal for next year's Parade certainly fits that criteria."
