Chelsea, Liverpool Keep Pace At The Top
Arsenal's Unbeaten Home Run Ended By Hull
Arsenal 1 Hull City 2
At the Emirates, Daniel Cousin scored the winner for Hull to end Arsenal's unbeaten home run with a 2-1 defeat. It was Arsene Wenger's 12th anniversary at the club, but Phil Brown's men join West Ham as the only clubs to have beaten Arsenal at their new ground. The gunners had taken the lead through a Paul McShane own goal but Geovanni struck an equalizer before Cousin headed home in the 66th minute.
Stoke City 0 Chelsea 2
At the Britannia Stadium, full-back Jose Bosingwa put Chelsea ahead after 36 minutes when he fired home following a chipped pass from Frank Lampard. Bosingwa then created Chelsea's second goal after 76 minutes when his cross provided Nicolas Anelka with the chance to claim his third league goal of the season.
Everton 0 Liverpool 2
At Goodison, Liverpool had Fernando Torres to thank for a 2-0 win in the 208th Merseyside derby against Everton. Torres had not found the net since Liverpool's opening-day win at Sunderland, but could have ended the day with a hat-trick. After goals in the 59th and 62nd minutes against Everton, he had another strike ruled out soon after. Everton's Tim Cahill was sent off with 10 minutes to play for a late challenge on Xabi Alonso.
Manchester United 2 Bolton Wanderers 0
At Old Trafford, referee Rob Styles was at the centre of penalty row. Styles awarded Cristiano Ronaldo a controversial penalty despite United apparently failing to even appeal for a foul. Jlloyd Samuel was the unlucky defender penalized for felling the Portugal winger, who slotted home from the spot-kick. Wayne Rooney, on as a sub, got the second following great work from Ronaldo.
Newcastle United 1 Blackburn Rovers 2
At St James' Park Newcastle slumped to a 2-1 defeat against Blackburn. The club's new interim manager Joe Kinnear was present at the game but his arrival was insufficient to jolt the Magpies into action. After half an hour Chris Samba stole in to nod Carlos Villanueva's free-kick past Shay Given. Roque Santa Cruz's header made it 2-0 shortly before the interval. Michael Owen was taken down by Ryan Nelsen after 50 minutes and made it 2-1 from the spot.
Aston Villa 2 Sunderland 1
Djibril Cisse, on loan from Marseille, struck a fine first-time shot from the edge of the area to put Sunderland a goal up. Ashley Young restored parity after 17 minutes when he curled a free-kick beyond Craig Gordon from the left. John Carew made it 2-1 after another Young free-kick was charged down, allowing Stiliyan Petrov to square the ball to the Norwegian to convert.
Fulham 1 West Ham United 2
At Craven Cottage, Carlton Cole tapped home after 44 minutes before Matthew Etherington made it two goals in as many minutes in a late first-half flurry of activity which also saw Andrew Johnson sent off for the hosts. Danny Murphy's penalty in the second half gave Fulham hope when Lucas Neill was penalized for handball in the area, but it was not enough.
Middlesbrough 0 West Bromwich Albion 1
'Boro keeper Ross Turnbull gifted West Brom the three points at the Riverside, fumbling Jonas Olsson's tame shot as the visitors won 1-0. Sub Ishmael Miller played in Olsson with an overhead kick but when his side-footed effort should have been easily gathered, it trickled between Turnbull's legs.
Portsmouth 2 Tottenham Hotspur 0
On Sunday at Fratton Park, Jermain Defoe scored a first-half penalty against former club Tottenham before Peter Crouch added a second to give Portsmouth a 2-0 victory and leave Juande Ramos' utterly useless side rooted to the bottom of the table.
Wigan Athletic 2 Manchester City 1
At the JJB, Amr Zaki converted a debatable penalty to give Wigan a narrow 2-1 victory over Man City. Referee Steve Bennett gave the spot-kick in the 34th minute after Javier Garrido brought down Wilson Palacios inside the box but the contact looked minimal. Antonio Valencia had earlier seen his spectacular 16th-minute opening goal cancelled out by Vincent Kompany's close-range finish from an Elano free-kick five minutes later.
