Toon Army Holds The Reds At Old Trafford
Chelsea Lays Down The Gauntlet, Tops Table
Arsenal 1 West Bromwich Albion 0
At the Emirates, Arsenal were first up on Saturday last to open the new Premier League season and recorded a narrow 1-0 victory over newly promoted West Bromwich Albion. New signing Samir Nasri opened his account after only four minutes, finding the bottom corner of the net following a lay-off from Denilson.
Everton 2 Blackburn Rovers 3
At Goodison, Andre Ooijer netted a last-gasp winner for Blackburn in a 3-2 victory. David Dunn put Blackburn ahead after 22 minutes but on the stroke of half-time Mikel Arteta beat Paul Robinson with a 20-yard free-kick. The home fans were celebrating again when Ayegbeni Yakubu headed home to put them ahead after 64 minutes only for Blackburn to draw level through Roque Santa Cruz two minutes later. Ooijer bagged the winner after Ryan Nelsen hit the post.
Middlesbrough 2 Tottenham Hotspur 1
At the Riverside, defender David Wheater opened the scoring from close range after Afonso Alves' effort came off the bar. Mido then sealed matters four minutes from time. There was still time for Robert Huth to halve the deficit by heading a David Bentley free-kick into his own net.
Hull City 2 Fulham 1
At the KC Stadium Hull celebrated a first ever Premier League victory. Seol Ki-hyeon put Fulham ahead in the eighth minute from Jimmy Bullard's cross. But Geovanni beat Mark Schwarzer with a shot in the 22nd minute to level. It was left to Caleb Folan to ensure it would be Hull's day to take the three points.
West Ham United 2 Wigan Athletic 1
At Upton Park, Dean Ashton bagged two goals for West Ham in the 2-1 victory against Wigan. He opened the scoring after only three minutes and seven minutes later the former Norwich man tapped-in. Two minutes into the second half, Amr Zaki smashed in Emile Heskey's flick-on to give the visitors hope, but they could not find the equalizer.
Bolton Wanderers 3 Stoke City 1
At the Reebok, newly-promoted Stoke were given a lesson in Premiership footie. Bolton defender Gretar Steinsson's cross flew over Thomas Sorensen and into the top corner just after the half hour mark. Kevin Davies then outmuscled two defenders, heading in a long ball in the 41st minute, and the Potters' Premier League bow was certain to end in defeat after Johan Elmander grabbed a debut goal in the 45th to make it 3-0. Ricardo Fuller gave the Potters something to smile about with an injury-time goal.
Sunderland 0 Liverpool 1
At the Stadium of Light, Sunderland had enjoyed the best of the play but Fernando Torres produced a vicious drive eight minutes from time to claim the points.
Chelsea 4 Portsmouth 0
On Sunday at Stamford Bridge the reign of Luiz Felipe Scolari began with a 4-0 win over Portsmouth. Joe Cole, Nicolas Anelka, Frank Lampard (penalty) and Deco all netted as the Blues made short work of the FA Cup holders to top the Premier League.
Manchester United 1 Newcastle United 1
At Old Trafford, United were missing a host of first-team regulars, including Carlos Tevez, so youngster Fraizer Campbell started up front with Wayne Rooney. Newcastle took the lead on 22 minutes when Obafemi Martins headed home from a James Milner corner. But it took the reigning English champions just two minutes to draw level, as Darren Fletcher finished from a Ryan Giggs cross. Nemanja Vidic hit the bar for the home side, but Kevin Keegan's side held out for a point.
Aston Villa 4 Manchester City 2
At Villa Park, Gabriel Agbonlahor scored a seven-minute hat-trick. He netted on 69, 74 and 76 minutes to give Villa a 4-1 advantage and assure them of three points. John Carew had put Villa in front early in the second half but his strike was cancelled out by Elano on 64 minutes. Vedran Corluka got City's second - a consolation effort a minute from time. City lost Valeri Bojinov before kick-off when he snapped his Achilles during the warm-up and now faces six months on the sidelines.
