Out & About

The McPartland's are very well known both in New York city and in the local area of Mineola. Noel McPartland, is an icon in the bar business all the way in the Wall Street financial district where he worked for many years in the Killarney Rose on Pearl street. His wife Tilly is a pillar of success in the Irish community through her hard work, her generosity and for always giving a helping hand.

It was a wet 4th of July weekend and that spoiled a lot of plans for barbecues for the weekend and was a little bit upsetting for many but the fireworks never stopped and were better than ever.

I watched them on TV and they looked outstanding from where I was - having a pint in a nice cozy pub out on Long Island!

Talking about Long Island one of it's best kept secrets is The Recovery Room bar and restaurant right next to the Mineola train station that is owned by the McPartland family all the way from Mayo.

This great family run restaurant is always lively with regular customers and commuters transferring at the station on their way into Manhattan and also for visitors going and coming from Winthrop hospital just next door.

Well, with gasoline prices way up it is changing the way people get around. I see a lot of people on their bikes - now that is good exercise.

Maybe it will be back to the good old days when you would ask a girl does she want a lift home it would be on the crossbar of the bike. Up yea boyo..!

Bruce Caulfield and his lovely wife Cathy had some down time to themselves over the 4th of July weekend as they were seen at Fitzpatrick's Grand Central Hotel on 44th Street just off Lexington Avenue in a very relaxed mood as they now have two babies to take care of - that is a lot of work believe me.

John Mahon one of New York's top restaurateurs was in the city last week after a busy schedule in Ireland - he has a lot of business to attend to on both side of the Atlantic Ocean.

This man is always on the go especially with his involvement with some of New York's finest restaurants such as Langan's on 47th Street; Eamonn's on 45th Street; O'Brien's on 46th Street; Channel 4 on 48th Street; Pig 'N' Whistle on 47th Street; Pig 'N' Whistle on Third Avenue and Pig 'N' Whistle on Second Avenue.

Where does he get the time to meet with all his partners?

I would love to be at one of those meetings as all of the restaurants and bars are all so successful - good on you John.

The Saw Doctors are coming to town for a few concerts in August and Governors Island will be one of the dates.

We will keep you posted on the dates. Anita Daly has been recognized for her work in the entertainment industry as she is pretty good at her work and has a great relationship with this paper.

Joe Murphy as everybody knows is making a great recovery from a recent setback in his health.

Joe as you might know was a columnist with the Irish Echo newspaper before moving on to start the Irish Voice newspaper over 25 years ago and was also a helping hand in the establishment of this paper The Irish Examiner USA.

The knowledge of this man is superb and it has passed on to us and has proven to be a great help in the success of this paper at the forefront of the Irish community and the Irish Americans in North America, we thank you Joe.

We paid a visit to Stout last week hoping to catch up with Noelle but it was so busy we missed each other but we did have a great pint of Guinness.

We moved next door to see was she in the sister establishment, Fat Annie's Truck Stop a fabulous place to hang out, you have got to check it out.

Hope your enjoying the weather, is it hot or what?

See you all next week...
