A new sculpture appeared in the middle of the rotary (known locally as The Acre) in Midleton Co Cork, Ireland and no one seems to know what it's all about. At the moment it is the topic of many conversations and witticism's , a reader who is a little shy about going public, but who has all the sarcasm, humor and cynical parody of a traditional Irish Ballad, sent us this following poem.

The Folly in the Acre

It has arrived from God knows where,
And left standing in the Acre.
A thing that's built of cold white steel,
Unknown who is the maker.
All are baffled as they pass,
Wondering what it might be.
Resembling a car turned upside down,
With its exhaust pipes, plain to see.

Could it have come from outer space,
Some old sputnik's outer casing.
That has simply broken off,
To give us all a rude awakening.
Is it just a loony piece,
Scrap metal waste, as some remarked.
Or even a new type garbage bin,
Designed to look like, modern art.

It has been said, it's not the fault,
Of our councilors in the Chamber.
They had no vote, on this thing,
That desecrates our Acre.
Are the Arts Council, the culprits,
Did they splash out on this folly.
Wasting our money in time of need,
Better spent, buying a hospital trolley.
