St. Brigid's Saved By Anonymous Donation Of $20 Million
An anonymous donor has stepped forward with $20 million to save St. Brigid's Church in the East Village according to a story first reported in New York's Daily News.
Half of the donation has been allocated to restoring the church to its former glory, while $8 million is to go towards maintaining the church's school and $2 million as an "endowment" for the parish itself.
Edward Cardinal Egan refused to reveal the donor's identity simply saying that it was a "he" and that the gift was received after a "personal meeting."
"This magnificent gift will make it possible for St. Brigid's Church to be fittingly restored with its significant structural problems properly addressed," he continued.
Real-estate developer Michael Rosen said, "It's a beautiful gift to the community. It's the highest form of charity to give money anonymously," while denying any connection to the donation.
Ed Torres, chairman of the Committee to Save Saint Brigid's, said: "We rejoice today in the miracle that has saved our church."
