Power To Tackle Digital Divide

"Dealing with constantly changing technology can be a daunting prospect, particularly for those of us who may not be familiar or accustomed to it."

Minister of State for Information Society, Sean Power, T.D., launched The Home Computing Initiative (HCI) Roadshow this week which will see the ICT industry working together with Credit Unions to tackle the growing 'digital divide' in Ireland and to promote wider, more inclusive use of computers in Irish society.

Speaking at the launch, Minister Power said, "I am delighted that one of my first engagements as Minister with responsibility for Information Society involves the promotion of such a worthwhile initiative in my own area. The Information Society is all about people and providing them with access to further opportunities and this initiative aims to do exactly that"

"Dealing with constantly changing technology can be a daunting prospect, particularly for those of us who may not be familiar or accustomed to it. The HCI will demystify that world and allow people to participate in the Information Society by communicating with people in plain, jargon free language. By involving Credit Unions nationwide, it simplifies the process of buying by offering packages tailored to suit different types of computer users, and makes these technologies more affordable."

Currently, there are almost 4 homes in every 10 that do not have computers, and so many people are being excluded from the opportunities that the information society provides.
