Cowen Raises The Undocumented With U.S. Senate Delegation
While recognising the political difficulties attached to the issue of immigration reform in the United States, he pressed for an approach that would allow greater movement of people in both directions between Ireland and America and could also provide a platform for a resolution of the plight of the undocumented.
The Taoiseach, Brian Cowen TD, held extensive discussions on Monday with a high-level US congressional delegation led by Senator Patrick Leahy of Vermont, Senator Thad Newton of Mississippi and Senator Richard Shelby of Alabama.

He also set out his vision for investment in education, innovation and infrastructure and the development of the all-island economy as key elements for the future success of the Irish economy.
In response to comments by the US representatives on the tremendous success of Ireland in the European Union, he stressed the importance of a successful outcome to the Lisbon Treaty referendum next month.
The Taoiseach also raised the question of the undocumented Irish in the United States.
While recognising the political difficulties attached to the issue of immigration reform in the United States, he pressed for an approach that would allow greater movement of people in both directions between Ireland and America and could also provide a platform for a resolution of the plight of the undocumented.
