The Taoiseach On Thomas Flatley

Always proud of his roots in Kiltimagh, Co. Mayo, Tom's story is an inspiration to countless Irish emigrants who followed this same route and who demonstrated similar courage and perseverance in the face of adversity and hardship.

I was deeply saddened to hear of the recent death of Thomas Flatley, a wonderful leader and friend to many in the Irish community in Boston. I would like to convey my condolences to his wife Charlotte and their family.

Always proud of his roots in Kiltimagh, Co. Mayo, Tom's story is an inspiration to countless Irish emigrants who followed this same route and who demonstrated similar courage and perseverance in the face of adversity and hardship. While his exceptional success and vision in business is widely recognized, his extensive support for many organisations and charities, both in America, Ireland and beyond, also remain as a powerful legacy. As a man deeply committed to his faith, he never forgot the needs of those who were less fortunate in our society and led many others to lend vital support across the community.

Tom's commitment to his Irish heritage was reflected particularly in his desire to see a suitable Memorial erected in Boston for the victims of the Irish Famine. Working with our good friend Mayor Tom Menino and others, he was the driving force behind the Famine Memorial project, which is now a famous landmark in the heart of the City of Boston.

In particular, I would like to pay tribute to Tom for his work on the Economic Advisory Board. I know that this work was appreciated in particular by my predecessor, Bertie Ahern T.D. As the Irish economy developed over recent years, we were fortunate to be able to reach out to very successful business people such as Tom Flatley to guide and advise us in the further development of those links for the mutual benefit of both Ireland and America. Tom Flatley was always loyal to his homeland and constantly supportive of any endeavours which underpinned Ireland's strong relationship with America. We are extremely grateful for this.

We were deeply proud of Tom Flatley and all that he accomplished. I hope that the legacy which he leaves, in so many spheres, will serve as a consolation to his family and his friends as they bear this great loss.

Brian Cowen,
Taoiseach
