Cornelius 'Connie' Doolan, RIP

Cornelius 'Connie' Doolan, one of 11 children, born in Greenmount on the south side of Cork City. He emigrated to the United States from Cork in 1955 and then served in the U.S. army. Later he operated a restaurant in New York City, one of many of his endeavors. A former hurler on the Cork and New York teams, he was a proud member the 1958 Saint Brendan's Cup team.

Connie became wholeheartedly involved in community activities throughout the New York area. His sincere devotion to the Irish cause was recognized by organizations including the Grand Council of Emerald Societies and the NYPD. Diageo Guinness USA honored him in real terms in 1991 when they appointed Connie as Director of Trade Relations for North America.

Connie was a founding member of the Emerald Society of the Licensed Beverage Industry and a member of the Knights of Columbus, Knights of St. Patrick and the AOH.

Connie was included in Irish America Magazine's top 100. Fittingly in 1994 his outstanding charitable work was recognized when he was awarded the coveted Caritas Medal by Molloy University.

Connie was always known for his style and generous nature. Some years ago he recalled his excitement at being chosen as Grand Marshall for the 1992 New York Saint Patrick's Day Parade.

"The memories are so vivid in my mind because I was both privileged humbled to represent all those who came before me, who gave us our lives and our beliefs. Cardinal O'Connor's words of encouragement and support were inspirational and the Mass at the Cathedral was beautiful. Saint Patrick's Cathedral choir was majestic as their voices rose to the rafters. It was a thrill to see the Fighting 69th in all its splendor. I underwent an indescribable felling of pride in one's ideals and principles and an everlasting and beautiful remembrance and joy of sharing a glorious occasion with family and friends forever."

Connie is survived by his wife Anne and his two sons Kevin and John.
