Out & About
David O'Sullivan outdid his previous fabulous events with this spectacular show and dinner, truly an unforgettable evening and a great coup for the The Ireland-U.S. Council.
Sorry if you missed this column last week, I had gone to Ireland to say goodbye to a great friend of mine, Brendan O'Brien, the lead singer of the Dixies Showband.
Brendan died of a heart attack on Thursday April 3rd in his home in Cork City - one of the saddest days in Cork for a long time. His sudden death was made even more sad coming so soon after the passing of Joe Dolan. In his heyday, during the 1960s and 1970s, Brendan had wowed fans from Cork to Las Vegas with hit records one after another and with his talent and good looks. Mourners came from all over Ireland and across the world to pay their respects - Brendan Bowyer of the Royal Showband, who knew him since 1959, said he was a great showman who he loved dearly. Joe Mac the drummer and one of the original Dixies paid tribute to his fellow band member and long-time friend. Also there were Declan Ryan of the Regal Showband; Stephan Travers of the Miami Showband and Gina Dale Haze of the Champions - a fitting turn-out for, as someone described it, "Brendan's final gig". His brothers, daughters and sons came in from Toronto, Canada and his daughter Trish sang a plaintive 'Ave Marie' during the celebrated requiem mass, proving that while Brendan has gone his talent lives on in his family, may he rest in peace.
Senator Hillary Rodman Clinton was in town on Wednesday last for the Irish-American Presidential Forum that was presented by its Chairman John Dearie. The event was hosted by none other than our very own Adrian Flannelly of Irish Radio Networks who has been broadcasting now for four decades - now that's a long time, what do you think? It was also attended by all the top people in the Irish-American community... The lady herself Mae O'Driscoll was there and we also saw Larry Kirwin of Black 47 along with Malachy McCourt who was in fine voice. Malachy got the crowd going while we were waiting for the Senator, good on you Malachy. We also saw Jeff Cleary and Grant Lally from the GOP camp - probably checking out the competition!
A wonderful night was had by all last Thursday night as the The Ireland-U.S. Council hosted the Irish Chamber Orchestra at The Metropolitan Club. The music, led by Artistic Director, Anthony Marwood was just fabulous and and was followed by cocktails and dinner. In attendance were guests such as Mr. and Mrs. Brian Stack of CIE Tours International, Pattie Cunningham of Continental Airlines, Ciaran O'Reilly and Charlotte Moore of The Irish Repertory Theatre, Maggie Cadden of Dara Records, Attracta Lyndon of Dooley Rent A Car and Jim Ryan of Good Day New York Channel 5 fame. We also saw Mary Deady from the Consul General's office, Niall Miller, Kevin Fegan and his brother Owen Fegan from that great band from Cork, Ruby Horse who once played the Conan O'Brien and David Letterman shows. D.J Carey made his present felt and Siobhan Walsh of Concern was looking beautiful as usual. There were a lot more individuals that I would like to mention but it would take up the whole page! The night was so good that some of the guests carried on into the wee small hours of the morning, celebrating at a nearby hotel, it must have been good fun with our own Tony Quinn and a host of others like Tom Ryan, Jim Adrian, James Higgins, Barry Lynch, Joan King, Tom Slattery... It must have been some party! Getting back to the night itself, David O'Sullivan outdid his previous fabulous events with this spectacular show and dinner, truly an unforgettable evening and a great coup for the Council.
