Saoirse Ronan Nominated For Best Supporting Actress

Day-Lewis Gets The Nod For The Best Actor Oscar

Irish teenager Saoirse Ronan has been nominated for an Oscar in another great year for Irish nominees. Ronan is nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category for her performance in 'Atonement'. The 13-year-old faces competition from Cate Blanchett ('I'm Not There'), Ruby Dee ('American Gangster'), Amy Ryan ('Gone Baby Gone') and Tilda Swinton ('Michael Clayton') for the award.

Commenting on her nomination from New Zealand, where she is shooting a film, Ronan said she was "delighted and thrilled".

Other Irish interest in this year's awards includes Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová, who are nominated in the Best Original Song category for 'Falling Slowly' from 'Once'. Armagh-born cinematographer Séamus McGarvey is nominated in the Best Cinematography category for his work on 'Atonement'.

Wicklow resident Daniel Day-Lewis is nominated for Best Actor for his performance in 'There Will Be Blood'.

The Oscars take place on Sunday 24 February.
