United Retakes The Top Slot From Arsenal
Liverpool Continue To Stumble In The New Year, But Still Climb To Fourth
Arsenal 1 Birmingham City 1
Arsenal dropped to 2nd in the EPL as they failed to add to an Emmanuel Adebayor penalty, being held to a 1-1 draw against Birmingham. Arsenal dominated the early stages but could find no way past the Blues until Stephen Kelly was adjudged to have fouled Eduardo in the box in the 21st minute - and Adebayor slotted in the resulting spot-kick. The Gunners could not hold their lead, though, Garry O'Connor's header from a corner leveling the match only three minutes after the break
Chelsea 2 Tottenham Hotspur 0
Juliano Belletti scored Chelsea's first -a great strike after 19 minutes - as the third-placed Blues won 2-0. Dimitar Berbatov gave Chelsea a scare with a second-half free-kick which just cleared the bar - but Avram Grant's men made sure when the in-form Shaun Wright-Phillips scored a second goal in the 80th minute.
Middlesbrough 1 Liverpool 1
Liverpool dropped two more costly points at the Riverside Stadium, where a 26th-minute goal from George Boateng gave Boro a 1-0 lead. Stewart Downing then hit the post for the hosts in the second half, but the Reds rescued a draw when Fernando Torres' scored with a right-footed drive from 25 yards 19 minutes from time.
West Ham United 2 Fulham 1
Simon Davies got Fulham off to a great start with a goal direct from a free-kick to put the Cottagers 1-0 up after just eight minutes. But Roy Hodgson's team could not see the job through, Dean Ashton equalizing shortly before the half-hour and Anton Ferdinand giving the Hammers the points in the 69th minute.
Everton 1 Manchester City 0
The Toffee's winner came from a Mikel Arteta corner, Joleon Lescott hitting the target with a 31st-minute header on the end of the Spanish winger's delivery as Everton finished the day level on points with Liverpool.
Aston Villa 3 Reading 1
Villa's John Carew struck in the 22nd minute to set them on their way and then made sure with his second goal in the 88th. Royals' goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann was a touch fortunate to escape with just a yellow card for a challenge on Gabriel Agbonlahor at the start of the second half. But Martin Laursen doubled the lead soon afterwards with a 55th-minute header from a corner, and James Harper's 90th-minute strike for the visitors was mere consolation.
Derby County 0 Wigan Athletic 1
Derby had an opportunity to vindicate some of Paul Jewell's transfer-window signings. But none of the bottom club's players managed to get on the scoresheet in a 1-0 defeat at home to their new manager's old club Wigan. The Rams were reduced to 10 men when Claude Davis was sent off midway through the second half for a second bookable offence - and Antoine Sibierski scored the winner eight minutes from time.
Manchester United 6 Newcatle United 0
Cristiano Ronaldo fired home a second-half hat-trick as United went back to the top of the EPL with a 6-0 destruction of Newcastle. After a goalless first half, the winger fired the home side in front on 49 minutes with a low free-kick before Carlos Tevez doubled their advantage six minutes later. Ronaldo made it three with a 70th-minute strike before Rio Ferdinand got in on the act by volleying home after a Wayne Rooney chip on 85. Ronaldo completed his first United hat-trick two minutes from time and Tevez finished the romp with a 90th-minute header, with Newcastle's agony compounded by the sending-off of Alan Smith.
Sunderland 2 Portsmouth 0
On Sunday, two goals from Kieran Richardson boosted Sunderland's EPL survival hopes. Portsmouth fell behind in the 33rd minute to Richardson's first goal and the lead was doubled just before the break with another excellent finish from Richardson, who raced into the box and fired a shot beyond David James.
Bolton Wanderers 1 Blackburn Rovers2
In Sunday's other game, with Nicolas Anelka just a fond memory and El-Hadji Diouf away on African Nations Cup duty with Senegal, Gary Megson's side have a gaping hole in the firepower department. And that was evident at the Reebok, despite captain Kevin Nolan's impressive first-half opener. But Christopher Samba headed an equalizer within 10 minutes of the restart before Jason Roberts came off the bench to lash home a deflected 90th-minute winner.
