No Change In Drink-Drive Law
Provisional figures released this week showed that in the week before Christmas, 357 people tested were found to be over the drink-driving limit
The Chairman of the Road Safety Authority Gay Byrne told reporters on Tuesday that he would prefer greater enforcement of existing drink-driving legislation rather than lower the blood/alcohol limit.
His comments come after a freedom of information request by Fine Gael Transport spokesperson Fergus O'Dowd revealed communications from the Department of Health to the Department of Transport which expressed their disappointment at the fact that legislation to reduce the blood/alcohol limit was not included as part of the Government's new road safety initiative
Provisional figures released this week showed that in the week before Christmas, 357 people tested were found to be over the drink-driving limit, while during Christmas this fell to 301.
The Department of Transport has reportedly asked the Road Safety Authority to advise on whether such a reduction in the bloood/alcohol limit is useful in the campaign against drink-driving.
Minister for Transport Noel Dempsey is expected to receive a report on the issue in the next few weeks.
