A new survey from the Health Service Executive shows that Irish adults are the third-heaviest drinkers in Europe, with Luxembourg and Hungary being the only European countries with higher alcohol consumption rates.
Based on data from the Central Statistics Office and the Revenue Commissioners, the new report claims that the average Irish person consumes 10.6 litres of pure alcohol every year, a figure that has remained static since 2003.
Beer is the most popular drink in Ireland, with a 50% market share, followed by wine on 21% and spirits on 19%.
