If you have a poem you'd like to see published in The Irish Examiner then send it to:

The Poetry Corner

or, preferably, you can email it direct to
ronniemcginn@eircom.net.

If possible keep your poem to 20 lines. You may choose any subject you like, in any form you like as long as it's original. We look forward to hearing from you.

Matthew Mellet of West Caldwell, New Jersey, whose family is originally from the Ballinrobe town land of Kilmaine in the southern part of County Mayo, sent us this week's poem.

Sometimes we get the impression that a poem is something written on paper. This is not altogether the truth. The printing on paper is really a poem second hand. The real poem is an event of the mind. Matthew Mellet's poem is an exciting illustration of the point in question.

Today I received a special gift from Heaven

On a train ride north, a young man named Kyle Andrew took his seat next to mine
At the age of sixteen, he was full of life
He spoke of baseball, hanging with friends and surfing at the shore
The future sparkled in his eyes, and a big smile filled his face
He was taking the train to meet his girl

We passed the time with games of hangman, labyrinths and tic-tac-toe
We talked about music and a mutual love of rock n roll
We watched the scenery, the boats on the lake and admired deer standing tall in the fields

The train ride was long but the time passed quickly
Before I knew it, the day was over
We arrived at the station and shook hands goodbye
A day of friendship only to be remembered in place

Today I received a special gift from Heaven
For ten years ago, this very day, my son of six, my only son
Was taken from this life
But today God sent me one more day with my son

As a special gift from Heaven
