The Gunners' Slide Continues With Loss To Hammers

United Just Three Ahead At The Top After Stumble At Fratton Park

Manchester City 0 Charlton Athletic 0

On Friday Charlton dug in for a goalless draw at Man City. City had the best of the contest but failed to make what chances they did create tell. Emile Mpenza and Joey Barton went close before the interval but it was Nedum Onuoha who missed the best opportunity, nodding tamely over from seven yards despite being totally unmarked.

Everton 4 Fulham 1

In Good Friday's other game Everton moved up to fifth place after they thrashed Fulham 4-1 at Goodison in the Toffees' biggest win of the season. Everton had to come from behind after Carlos Bocanegra had given Fulham the lead but Lee Carsley and Alan Stubbs replied with their first goals of the season while James Vaughan added the third just before the break. Victor Anichebe scored the fourth soon after coming on as substitute in the 80th minute.

Chelsea 1 Tottenham Hotspur 0

In Saturday's early game Chelsea's got the only goal in a poor London derby at Stamford Bridge. Portugal defender Ricardo Carvalho grabbed the only goal in the 52nd minute when he thumped a low shot from 35 yards which Paul Robinson failed to get down to.

Arsenal 0 West Ham United 1

West Ham gained a vital three points with a 1-0 win away to Arsenal. The Gunners were on top for most of the match but Bobby Zamora raced clear on the stroke of half-time and lobbed a left-foot shot over Jens Lehmann.

Reading 1 Liverpool 2

Peter Crouch laid on a pass for Alvaro Arbeloa and the Spanish full-back curled a shot past Marcus Hahnemann in the 15th minute for Liverpool's first. Reading equalized in the 47th minute when Brynjar Gunnarsson angled a shot in across Jose Reina but Dirk Kuyt clinched victory for the Reds on 86.

Middlesbrough 4 Watford 1

Gareth Southgate's men were ahead inside five minutes as Adam Johnson's cross picked out Stewart Downing at the far post and he headed the ball back across goal for Mark Viduka to score. Damien Francis leveled for the Hornets in the 23rd minute but George Boateng's shot deflected in off team-mate Chris Riggott to restore Boro's advantage four minutes later. Viduka added a third in the 75th minute and laid on a fourth for Fabio Rochemback.

Blackburn Rovers 1 Aston Villa 2

Villa eased their relegation worries with a 2-1 win at Blackburn. Benni McCarthy put Rovers in front with a 24th-minute penalty after Phil Bardsley had tripped Morten Gamst Pedersen. Villa hit back 10 minutes later as Bardsley crossed from the right and Patrik Berger scored past Brad Friedel. Gareth Barry had a penalty saved by Friedel in the second minute of the second half but Martin O'Neill's men were not to be denied and Gabriel Agbonlahor scored in the 73rd minute.

Wigan Atheltic 1 Bolton Wanderers 3

Wigan suffered a 3-1 home defeat to north-west rivals Bolton. The Latics went ahead in the 32nd minute when Paul Scharner squared the ball for Emile Heskey, who bundled the ball over the line. Sam Allardyce's men recovered and Nicolas Anelka drew them level a minute before half-time. And Wanderers took the lead in the 68th minute when El-Hadji Diouf played in Andranik Teymourian and the Iranian kept his nerve to score. He added his second five minutes later when he headed in Kevin Davies' cross.

Sheffield Utd 1 Newcastle Utd 2

The Blades slipped into the relegation zone on goal difference after this defeat at Bramall Lane. Obafemi Martins' 17th-minute strike separated the teams at the break but Christian Nade drew the Blades level in the 74th minute. The Magpies' winner came courtesy of Steven Taylor who rose highest to head in James Milner's corner.

Portsmouth 2 Manchester United 1

In Saturday's late game United were short of their best and Harry Redknapp's side responded by taking the three points. Goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar was partly to blame for Pompey's first when he could only parry a Benjani Mwaruwari effort and Matt Taylor pounced, acrobatically volleying home from six yards. The Dutchman was then caught in a mix-up with captain Rio Ferdinand, who scored past his own keeper in the 89th minute. Then, just seconds later, John O'Shea bundled in from close range after an error from David James but there was no equalizer despite late pressure.

Watford 4 Portsmouth 2

In Monday's early game Watford beat Portsmouth 4-2 to keep their dream of Premiership survival alive. Matt Taylor put Portsmouth ahead on 16 minutes, but Hameur Bouazza leveled 12 minutes later from the spot after Tamas Priskin had been felled. Gavin Mahon scored with a spectacular effort in first-half injury time to give the hosts the upper hand. Hungarian Priskin netted his first EPL goal on 51 minutes and Bouazza netted his second with 17 minutes remaining to secure the points. Pompey grabbed a consolation goal through Arnold Mvuemba late on.

Aston Villa 1 Wigan Athletic 1

Villa came from behind to take a 1-1 draw at Wigan but failed to make the most of their numerical advantage. Emile Heskey broke the deadlock when he buried Lee McCulloch's header across goal. Wigan's chances suffered soon after when Antonio Valencia was sent off for a foul on Wilfred Bouma. Five minutes into the second-half, Villa were level, Patrick Berger crossed for Gabriel Agbonlahor who slipped between two defenders and deflected the ball over the line.

Bolton Wanderers 1 Everton 1

Bolton and Everton stay unchanged in fifth and sixth in the EPL after a 1-1 draw at the Reebok. Everton's defense suffered a breakdown in communication when every defender except Joleon Lescott attempted to play Bolton offside from an Ivan Campo free-kick. That left four Bolton attackers in the clear but Kevin Davies needed no help to slip the ball past Tim Howard. Everton equalized when James Vaughan stole in, took possession and finished calmly.

Fulham 1 Manchester City 3

City's first came when Joey Barton ghosted in behind the home defense before firing a first-time strike low past Antti Niemi. Winger DaMarcus Beasley scored the second, thumping the ball home from a tight angle at the near post. On the hour mark Emile Mpenza's pass found Darius Vassell after Liam Rosenior's slip, allowing the former England man to finish coolly. Chris Coleman's side hit back with 15 minutes remaining through Carlos Bocanegra but it was not enough to inspire a comeback.

Newcastle United 0 Arsenal 0

Arsenal missed two late chances in their battle for a Champions League place as they drew 0-0 at Newcastle. Close-range efforts from Julio Baptista and Gilberto were blocked on the line, first by Steven Taylor and then by Nolberto Solano but their forward line of Emmanuel Adebayor and Abou Diaby did not do enough. Shay Given was forced off through injury in the 25th minute, leaving deputy Steve Harper to take the gloves.

Charlton Athletic 0 Reading 0

In Monday's late game Charlton secured a much-needed point in a hard-fought scoreless draw with Reading. In a game of few chances Talel El Karkouri came closest to breaking the deadlock when he hit the bar with a header for Charlton, while Stephen Hunt headed just wide for Reading with minutes remaining.
