Somebody once described poetry as 'grasping at the indefinable'. The definition of poetry is an endless subject that brings out the best and the worst in us, probably to no avail. Somehow our poem this week, which has nothing to do with the topic, seemed to trigger off these thoughts. It comes from Peter Howarth, a man of vision, sincerity and humor. He has, so far, written nine books of poetry and has been heard on radio and television in Ireland. A native of Kerry, you will find his works on: www.poemstoenjoy.com
Pictures in the Sky
The old man sitting on the hill
Sees pictures in the sky
Invisible to you and me
However hard we try;
These pictures fill a storybook
That only he can read,
And meditating on these facts
His ideas start to breed.
The logic and assumptions made
Lead us into despair
As this old man construes the thoughts
He's pulled out of the air;
He makes the story fit the facts
Until it all seems true,
And then he starts believing it:
The only point of view.
Living in reality
Of everyday events,
The reasoning's of this old man
Just fail to make much sense;
We shun his explanations and
The things he has to say
And keep to life's own almanac
To find our chosen way.
