Poetry can be a very lonely occupation, yet poetry is an art that flourishes within a community -- you might even say it requires a 'community' in order to thrive. All over the world, there are poets tending their art & putting down roots in local neighborhoods, capturing the atmosphere and recording events around them. A poem nurtures and preserves the soul and history of a neighborhood especially where traditions, religious customs and areas are under the threat from an ever changing world.
Wishful Thinking!
Dog under control, it's off for a stroll,
Buttoned up for the wind and the rain,
The dull evening sky makes me realise
That I wish it was Christmas again.
When houses all bright with big twinkle lights,
Gave a welcoming glow to the air,
And easy to see from each Christmas Tree,
That a season of goodwill was there.
Hear a child humming, Santa is coming,
And everyone answers the call
Loving and giving made life worth living
Happy Christmas, the best time off all.
The Church and the choir, then home to the fire
Ah the difference a day can make.
The turkey and ham and cranberry jam
And the taste of a rich Christmas cake.
But here with the dog, there is no Christmas Log,
Only wind and the cold biting rain,
Weather this dreary can make a man weary
Oh, I wish it was Christmas again.
