Staunton "Fine" After Armed Confrontation

Ireland manager Steve Staunton is said to be fine after being confronted by an armed man on Monday evening

Republic of Ireland football manager Steve Staunton is said to be fine after a man confronted him with a gun outside the team's hotel outside Dublin.

An armed man apparently approached him at around 8pm on Monday evening as he was outside the Portmarnock Hotel where the Irish Republic's team is staying before their friendly international against The Netherlands.

Satunton fled from the intruder, who was later arrested by Gardai on a nearby beach.

The Football Association of Ireland released a statement which confirmed that the incident took place and reassuring the public that, "Steve is absolutely fine and looking forward to training".

A Gardai spokesman said, "We have one man in custody in relation to an incident that happened in Portmarnock shortly before 2000 BST.

"Gardai are continuing to search the area for the weapon."
