1907 There were more
extraordinary scenes at the
Abbey Theatre during a per-
formance of ‘The Playboy of
the Western World’. Neither
the management, police, the
author nor Lady Gregory
could quieten a large section
of the audience that hissesed,
booed, sang and shouted.
1922 The Irish Race
Congress ended in Paris.
Several members, including
Eamon de Valera lay a
wreath at the grave of the
unknown warrior. One was
also placed on the grave of
1798 leader Myles Byrne.
1939 William Butler
Yeats, poet and playwright,
died at Mentone on the
Riviera aged 73. The Abbey
Theatre closed for the whole
week in tribute to one of its
founders and first directors.
1942 An Taoiseach,
Eamon de Valera, said that
the Irish government was not
consulted by either the
British or American govern-
ments about the arrival of
American troops in Ireland.
1960 The Astor Cinema
in Derrybeg, County
Donegal, hosted the premiere
of Gael-Linn’s ‘Mise Eire’.
The film traced the history of
the State and the price paid
for freedom.
1972 The Irish Congress
of Trade Unions decided to
oppose entry to the European
Community on the terms
negotiated by the govern-
ment.
1983 One hundred resi-
dents of the Aran Islands said
that they were going to leave
Inishmore, the remaining 900
wanted fair treatment from
the government.
1984 The Late Late
Show appealed for £100,000
to finance a liver transplant in
America for Colin McStay, a
baby boy suffering from a
rare liver deficiency.
1988 In another setback
in their long fight for free-
dom, the Birmingham Six’s
appeal was rejected in the
Court of Appeal in London.
1991 The funeral took
place of John Kelly, former
Fine Gael minister, Attorney-
General and Professor of
Jurisprudence and Roman
Law at UCD, a uniquely inde-
pendent, incisive and witty
politician.
1998 The row over the
sitting of mobile phone masts
continued as the wife of an
Offaly garda fought to stop a
mast being erected in her
back garden.

1908 Prime Minister
Asquith denied that lawless-
ness in Ireland was at a seri-
ous level or that the govern-
ment sought to make it the
case for Home Rule.
However, he deplored cattle
driving, which is so injurious
to one of Ireland’s greatest
industries.
1915 A Norwegian cap-
tain was convicted at
Queenstown (Cobh) Petty
Sessions of having harbored
aliens, four Germans and one
Austrian, on board his ship.
He was fined £50 or three
months' imprisonment.
1928 In Belfast, 14 mem-
bers of the Opposition in the
Northern Parliament protest-
ed against the government’s
proposal to abolish propor-
tional representation. PR was
placed in the 1920
Government of Ireland Act as
a safeguard for minorities.
1932 The Dail was dis-
solved by a proclamation
signed by Governor-General
James MacNeill, ending 10
years of government by pro-

1946 Sir Shane Leslie
advocated the establishment
of national parks at Killarney, joined the Benedictine Order
North Donegal, the Curragh,
the Wicklow Mountains, the
Clare coast, Achill Island and
the Dingle Peninsula.
1957 A verbatim report
of the trial of Jim Larkin in
New York in 1920 was pre-
sented to the Lord Mayor of
Dublin, Robert Briscoe, by
RM Fox, the author of a
book on Larkin.
1963 Shannon Airport
moved into a new era as up-
to-date radar equipment was
installed, an important addi-
tion as the number of transat-

motorway, running between
Belfast and Dungannon, was
opened by the Northern
Minister for Development,
William Fitzsimons.
1980 Giuseppe Conlon
aged 56, who died protesting
his innocence in a London
hospital while serving a 12-

conspiracy, was buried in
Belfast.
1985 Patrick McEntee SC
was admitted to the Northern
Ireland Inner Bar. He become
the first QC from the South
since partition.
1997 SIPTU, the largest
trade union in Ireland, voted
in favor of the new national
pay agreement Partnership
2000.

1913 In a massive rejec-
tion, the Home Rule Bill was
defeated in the House of
Lords at Westminster by 326
votes to 69.
1922 The first meeting of
the committee to draft a con-
stitution for the Irish Free
State took place under the
chairmanship of Michael
Collins.
Dom Columba Marmion,
writer of spiritual books,
died. A Dubliner ordained for
the Dublin Diocese, he later
in Belgium.
1947 The internationally
known labor leader Jim
Larkin died aged 72. Tributes
from individuals and union
organizations poured in for
this man of endless energy
who espoused the cause of
the unskilled worker. George

Bernard Shaw called for a
monument to be erected in
his honor.
1963 The Lord Mayor of
Dublin officially opened the
Dublin Jewish Friendship
Road. Over 130 people,
including the Chief Rabbi of
Ireland, Dr Isaac Cohen,
attended.
1972 Thirteen unarmed
civilians were shot dead in
Derry as British paratroopers
open fire on a banned civil
rights march. The fateful day
becomes known as Bloody
Sunday.
1975 Jack Lynch brought
Charles Haughey and Jim
Gibbons, exiled after the
Arms Trial, back onto the
Fianna Fail front bench.
1984 Luke Kelly of the
Dubliners died at the age of
43. His untimely death was
widely mourned.
1992 Charles Haughey
resigned as leader of Fianna
Fail and the battle to take
control of the party began.
1995 Fianna Fail leader
Bertie Ahern was in Belfast
canvassing support for the
Framework Document
drawn up by the Irish and
British governments.
1998 Irish and interna-
tional swimming coach Derry
O’Rourke was sentenced to
12 years in prison for sexually
assaulting children in his
care.
Fr Ivan Payne was
remanded on bail having
admitted indecently assault-
ing young boys.

1916 Captains Frederick
Brennell and Patrick Kelly of
the Cork Steamship
Company were awarded 100
guineas each in recognition
of their courage and seaman-
ship in evading attacks from
German aircraft.
1928 The outgoing
Governor-General, TM
Healy, left the Vice-Regal
Lodge in the Phoenix Park to

1938 A Breach of
Promise case in Cork Circuit
Court was adjourned as the
plaintiff had entered a con-
vent. The defendant, who has
agreed to pay £100, insisted
on a receipt from the plain-
tiff.
1953 One hundred and
twenty-eight people died as a
British Railways motor ves-
sel, the Princess Victoria.,
sank within sight of Belfast
Lough. She had battled with a
gale of almost hurricane
strength for seven hours
since leaving Stranraer.
1969 Deerpark Colliery,
the last on the Castle comer
coalfield in County Kilkenny,
closed.
1972 Widespread protests
took place over the Bloody
Sunday killings in Derry. An
Taoiseach announced a day
of national mourning as Dr
Donal 0 Sullivan, the Irish
Ambassador to Britain, was
recalled.
1974 Deputies Peter
Barry and Richard Burke
joined the Lord Mayor of
Cork, Senator Patrick
Kerrigan, at the inaugural
performance of the Irish
Ballet Company in the city.
1984 Anne Lovett, a 15-
year-old schoolgirl, died
while giving birth near a
Marian Grotto in Granard,
County Longford.
1987 Eamonn Coghlan
won the Wanamaker Mile in
Madison Square Garden in
New York. Marcus
O’Sullivan was second.
1994 President Clinton
defended his decision to grant
the Sinn Fein leader, Gerry
Adams, a temporary visa to
visit the US. He hoped it
would advance the cause of
peace.
1997 Eleven cases of BSE
in cattle were reported for
the month of January, a
downward trend that was
seen as encouraging. C
